Welcome to Austerity Bites! 🙂

This blog is my response to what our government calls ‘austerity’, but what the rest of us know as ‘poverty’.

One of the constant challenges of living on less is providing delicious, nutritious food for my children. I have two – Ishthara (11) and Kashmira (9) – and involve them with the cooking as much as possible. I think it’s important that children engage with food from a young age, so they can make informed choices about what they eat as they get older.

I spent half my adult life in Asia – and that is probably evident from many of my recipes.  In addition, we’re lacto-ovo (dairy and milk) vegetarians – which means that our out-goings on protein are less than most other families’.

Please feel free to use, amend, share and comment on these recipes!

    • Thanks, Ciara!

      I’m finding it’s great fun – I just hope I don’t run out of recipes!! 🙂

  1. Hi, I heard you on the G Hook show yesterday. I just thought what a great idea for a blog! I grew up with great food, austere food perhaps but always home cooked, tasty and fresh. I am going to try your chili icecream recipe at the weekend. Thanks.

    • Thank you so much for your kind comments. With regard to the chilli ice-cream, it really is delicious and – even though it was a ‘mistake’ in that it doesn’t freeze solid – the honey gives an interesting texture. Let me know what you think after you’ve made it!
